It’s not hard to see why electric hatchbacks are so popular. There’s a wide range to choose from, with most offering a great combination of practicality and value for money.
With an increasing number to choose from, you might be wondering where to start. Don’t worry – we’ve selected 10 great used electric car options for you.
The ID.3 is Volkswagen’s Golf-size all-electric hatchback, with enough space for five people and their luggage. There are several trim levels to choose from, including Life, Style, Family, Max and Tour, and even the entry-level version comes with a lot of equipment as standard, including an impressive 10-inch infotainment screen.
How far you can travel on a single charge depends on the size of the battery, but the top model has a range of more than 300 miles, according to official figures. Even the least expensive ID.3 can travel 216 miles between charges, which could be enough if you spend most of your time in the city.

You’ll be in good company if you choose the Nissan Leaf because it's the world’s most popular electric car. It also means that you won’t be short of choice when you’re looking for an affordable used electric hatchback.
While the first-generation Leaf (sold new between 2011 and 2018) is a cost-effective choice, we’re focusing on the second-generation model (sold new since 2018) because of its superior range and additional interior space. There are two versions to choose from: the standard Leaf, which has a range of 168 miles, and the Leaf E+, which can travel 239 miles between charges. One is great for city driving, while the other is perfect for longer commutes. In both cases, you’ll find enough space inside for four adults, plus a boot large enough for four suitcases or a pram.
Even though it was introduced to the UK back in 2014, the Tesla Model S still has one of the longest battery ranges of any new or used electric car. The latest model can travel an impressive 373 miles on a full charge, according to official figures, but even the older Model S cars are competitive against newer electric cars for range.
You also get a lot of car for your money: while the Model S is technically a hatchback like the other cars on our list, it’s as spacious and luxurious as large executive cars such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. You also have access to Tesla’s Supercharger network of rapid chargers.
The Hyundai Ioniq Electric was sold new from 2016 until 2022, so there are lots to choose from on the used car market. It’s practical and well equipped and, like all Hyundai cars, it was sold with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty from new. That compares very well with the three-year/60,000-mile warranty you get with most cars and the good news is that it’s transferable so if you buy a used Ioniq you get the balance of whatever warranty cover is left.
The Ioniq Electric was updated in the summer of 2019, getting a larger battery and a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Crucially, the new battery increased the Ioniq’s range to an official 193 miles, but even the old model could achieve 174 miles from a single charge.
After arriving in the UK in 2013, the BMW i3 quickly became one of the most popular premium electric cars on the market. Production stopped in 2022, but its smart styling, luxurious interior and minimalist dashboard still look bang up to date.
The latest versions can travel up to 189 miles between charges, but don’t be too quick to dismiss the earlier versions with smaller batteries. While a range estimate of 81 miles might seem low in the era of 300+ miles electric cars, it’s enough for a short commute and the battery will take less time to recharge.
If the retro-inspired styling of the Ioniq 5 doesn’t grab you, just wait until you see the interior, which features a pair of 12.3-inch digital displays, a flat floor, limousine-like rear legroom and a boot large enough to rival what you find in an estate car.
Some models even feature fully reclining ‘relaxation’ seats in the front, so you can enjoy a quick kip while you’re charging the battery. Not that you’ll get too much shuteye, because it’s possible to add 62 miles of range in just five minutes! The Ioniq 5 can travel between 238 and 315 miles on a full charge, depending on the model, according to official figures.
Don’t let the swooping coupé-like styling of the highly futuristic Kia EV6 fool you – the EV6 is more like an SUV, with enough space for a growing family and everyone’s luggage. There’s a 12.3-inch curved touchscreen infotainment system on all three models, all of which are backed by Kia’s seven-year warranty.
Each model has a different range estimate. Opt for the sporty GT, which is quick enough to rival some of the fastest sports cars, and you can look forward to travelling 263 miles between charges. Opt for the Long Range, and this increases to 328 miles, or 314 miles if you want the reassurance of four-wheel drive.
The BMW i4 has a very long range so it’s ideal if you’ve got a long commute or you want to avoid using the public charging network. The most affordable model, called eDrive 40 Sport, gives you a range of up to 365 miles, according to official figures.
Unlike the bold Ioniq 5 and EV6, the BMW i4 looks quite conventional, not least because it’s based on the 4 Series Gran Coupe. If you want an electric BMW that can match the thrilling acceleration of its high-performance petrol models, the M50 version is the one to go for. It’s as fast as many sports cars, although the trade-off is a slightly shorter battery range.
Even though it's been on sale since 2018, the Jaguar I-Pace is still a very appealing option. Its futuristic styling catches the eye, but one of its greatest strengths is the way it drives – the I-Pace feels as sporty as one of Jaguar’s sports cars or saloons.
Officially, the I-Pace can travel up to 292 miles between charges, and although the charging time is slower than some newer rivals, you’ll have no problem if you get used to charging the car overnight using a home charger. As an all-rounder, the I-Pace is hard to beat, thanks to its blend of practicality, smart styling, performance and range.
It’s genuinely hard to find fault with the Polestar 2. It looks great on the outside and the doors open to reveal a sophisticated interior with a minimalist look and a high-quality feel. The list of equipment included as standard is extremely long and includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated front seats and an 11.2-inch touchscreen infotainment screen.
There’s up to 406 miles of range available, according to official figures, and unlike some other electric cars the Polestar 2 is rated as a towing car. Fit an optional tow bar and you can haul a 1,500kg trailer or a six-berth caravan.
